Every homeowner wants to have a home and yard they are proud to show off to family members, friends, and neighbors alike. This is achievable with a lot of effort and many hours of labor in the Clearwater heat, but there are options that will reduce your workload. Lawn maintenance is essential if you own a yard, but it doesn’t have to be difficult— consider these plants and shrubs for easy maintenance all year long in Florida!
Most of Mid-Florida is USDA Zone 9 (A or B), but there are areas in Pinellas County (like Clearwater Beach) that creep into Zone 10. This won’t prevent you from planting any of these, but you may want to vary your planting process and subsequent care based on what zone you are in.
Big Blue Liriope
Liriope muscar is a perennial evergreen that grows to be about 2 feet in height and spread. Its tall, dark green leaves and lavender blooms (in late summer and early fall) make it a popular choice for front flowerbeds. It does best in full sunlight to partial shade, and only requires a medium amount of water. Liriope has been known to tolerate everything from deer and rabbit nibbles to drought, air pollution, and erosion. This evergreen should be planted, in full to partial sun, and mulched in the fall. This ground cover is an excellent choice for easy lawn maintenance in Clearwater.
These beautiful blooms peak from July to September with their pinkish lavender petals. They typically grow to be 3 to 4 feet in height and spread, and like partial shade. They are easily contained, so they work great as hedges for minimal lawn maintenance. For hydrangeas, install in early fall in full sun to a little shade. In the fall, you will need to add additional mulch. If there are dry spells in Clearwater during the growing season, keep it watered regularly.
Musk mallow is a tropical flower from Asia that was originally introduced as an ornamental plant. It is on the smaller side, remaining about 1 to 2 feet in height and 1 to 1.5 feet in spread. This perennial loves full sunlight and the brilliant blooms last from early summer until a frost. The blooms come in a variety of shades, including hot pinks and sunset oranges.
